Taiko workshop

Yesterday I had the pleasure to attend a Taiko workshop from Yamato (https://www.yts.nl/). Beautiful sounds coming from these Japanese drums!

We are all so happy at the Graduation ceremony :)

Nice memories with this fantastic team of colleagues at the graduation ceremony last year. 4 years filled with fun moments, challenging ones, personal growth and friendships, meditations, seminars and loads of shiatsu. Despite the endless study and practice, it went fast.

The Effect of Shiatsu Massage on Underlying Anxiety in Burn Patients

In this study you can see how shiatsu can be very helpful in relieving pain and anxiety.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4298863/

In the randomized study, 60 burn patients with underlying pain were enrolled. They were randomly allocated in two groups of hand massage and the control. The anxiety of underlying burn pain before and after the massage was evaluated using Burn Specific Pain Anxiety Scale (BSPAS).

The difference for anxiety scores in the hand Shiatsu massage group before and after massage were statistically significant, but in the control group was not significant.

Shiatsu Seminar and the art of listening

Today I was watching a seminar recorded on 2016 where Sasaki Sensei (@iokai.nl) was teaching some wonderful Shiatsu techniques and manipulations. What stays with me most of all he has shared, is the importance of listening in the practice of Shiatsu as a therapist. If the therapist is busy in his/her mind, he or she is unable to listen deeply to the body of the receiver. Once the technique is well acquired with training and practice, the mind is free. Free to listen.

The effects of shiatsu and acupressure on lower back pain

Today I enjoying reading two studies in PubMed (from the Journal of Physical Therapy Science and the Journal of Holistic Nursing). Interested to know more about decreasing chronic back pain with Shiatsu?

These are studies where Shiatsu and acupressure are used as treatments to decrease the level of pain on lower back.

In the first study (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11847714/ ) 66 individuals complaining of lower back pain were measured on state/trait anxiety and pain level before and after four shiatsu treatments. Each subject was then called 2 days following each treatment and asked to quantify the level of pain. Both pain and anxiety decreased significantly over time.

In the second study (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5574337/) the subject presented a 20 year history of low back pain. The subject was treated for a total of three 90 minute sessions within 2 weeks. Traditional physical therapy was administered together with acupressure (acupoints LI 4, GB 30, GB 31, and GB 34). Each point was held for approximately one minute or until the patient related that tenderness had subsided, with multiple repetitions. The data indicated that integrating acupressure in physical therapy could reduce pain, increase function, and decrease disability.

Acupressure treatment has been introduced by physical therapists and other professions to treat LBP based on the beliefs of removing obstructions that block energy flow and relieving pain by improving circulation and nutrition.
